What is Southern Cross?
Southern Cross is an epic cyclocross race based in the Chattahoochee National Forest of north Georgia held on Saturday, February 25th. In the same vein as the The Three Peaks USA, Iron Cross, Hilly Billy Roubaix, and Barry Roubaix the course will consist of a somewhat “traditional” cross course with twists, turns, run-ups & natural barriers. Then participants will head out on a 50 mile loop of dirt and paved roads featuring mountain top vistas, challenging climbs and views of tumbling creeks. Finally the course finishes with another CX course with features that the UCI would not approve like the Wall! Oh, you may encounter beer hand-ups to get you through it.
We’ll once again start and finish at the Montaluce Winery and Estates. With your race entry you will get one very challenging course, a generous post race meal, a great after race party, plus cash (for the top 3 overall men and women) and prizes that everyone has a chance at (not just the fastest). Check the website for details.
You’ll want to stick around for the Southern Cross post-race party because our sponsor list continues to grow with great prizes from Twin Six, Chamois Butt’r, Honey Stinger, Sfatto Clothing, Twin Six, Foundry Cycles, Mercury Wheels, 55nine Performance, The Gear Revival, Maxxis Tires, & DirtRag Magazine.BikeRumor.com will be on hand to record the days events, check out the gear you are running and they’ll have their very own swag toss at the post race party. We’ll also give away two free dinners at Montaluce’s amazing Le Vigne Restaurant. You do not want to miss this party.
Speaking of those great races listed above, we have all joined together to create the American Ultra Cross Championship Series or UltaCX for short.. The Southern Cross will serve as the final race for the 2011/2012 series and the first race in the 2012 series.
Speaking of the Le Vigne Restaurant, you can make reservations for after the race (or any other time) through their website. Be sure to let them know via the Special Requests section that your are with the Southern Cross event, so they know where to find you when your table is ready.
Demo bikes and giveaways
Foundry Cycles will be making the trip from Minnesota to the Southern Cross Race just so you can test ride some of the best road, mountain and of course, cross bikes ever constructed. These are not trophy bikes to decorate your garage with. They are hard working tools for hard working riders.

American Ultra Cross Championship Series
UltraCX for short
..but there is nothing short about these races. The Southern Cross wraps up the 2011 series and kicks off the 2012 series of long distance cross races. Sure doing a bunch of laps at breakneck speed on a short course is fun, but so is long stretches of gravel, winding country roads and huge run ups…OK, the latter may just be cruel, but you love it any way. Check out the whole series in 2012 and stay tuned to the UltraCX.com site for details about the series.
The Southern Cross is returning to the stunning Montaluce Winery and Estates of Dahlonega, GA in 2012. The course offers amazing views around the winery and the beautiful Tuscan style homes that dot the hills. This gorgeous property not only makes for a great race venue, but its also perfect for weddings, private events and corporate retreats. Check out the the website and inquire with the fine folks at Montaluce.
