Not all carbon wheelsets have to cost an arm and a leg. Using tricks learned from development of Control SL 29′s, we’ve been able to put together a competitively lightweight set of 29″ XC wheels at a more attainable price point. Please report the internal rim width, since that’s the dimension that is relevant & you had your calipers right there already.

Ahh, we took a photo of internal width. It is 22 mm.

How do these compare to the ENVE AM wheels?
>>How do these compare to the ENVE AM wheels?
Enve’s are much more expensive at $1700 just for the rims. We tested an Enve wheelset that cost $4000.
Weight is about the same since Enve’s are not superlight. I believe the Enve’s will be more rock-smash resistant. We’ve seen the Enve test facility and we’ve seen DH racers use Enve’s on rock courses. Those wheels and the way the fibers are woven can survive hits better than any carbon or aluminum rim.
Is there any word on a 26 inch version of these wheels?
Any plans to try some non-specialized tires which may or may not fit as snug? Mike, I doubt you will see a 26 inch version of this wheel.
Nice write up FC!
I need a set for my cx bike, but narrower. Is there such an animal? Also, lighter would be best.
I like my carby trail SL set a lot.
Love the price weight and look of these wheels …. what sort of riding will these wheels take? general trail use , mountain use? or careful grass only?
Are you sure about the 20 mm front axle conversion? It seems odd that they’d inclyude every other adapter but leave that out.
Often the 20 m axle simply won’t fit in a hub not designed for it.
Any updates on how these wheels are holding up?
Can we get an updated review?!
Great review, but the price is mismarked. These wheels are $1700.
Thanks!
DH
Ooops! Was looking at the wrong part of the specialized website! $1200, such a good deal.
Yes Dave, their site is a bit confusing. They have the $1700 Control SL wheels but the ones reviewed here are $1200.
These wheels seem hard to beat on paper. Question, are the roval decals removable for those of us that like stealthy builds? Thanks Francis
