Tobias Hild, CEO of SQlab, introduces three key additions to their 2017 lineup.

Based around the Ergowave Design Shell that was developed in partnership with the University of Frankfurt, SQlab’s newest saddles are designed to provide custom support and comfort for your delicate parts, and create a more dynamic seating position. This allows a rider to transition more easily between an upright position and a more aggressive position, while maintaining good interface between the saddle and your sit bones.

This design is featured in the new 611 saddle for mountain bikes, and is built with a wider, longer nose for sliding forward on the saddle on steep climbs. It also comes on the 612 road/XX version, which has a narrower, slightly shorter nose.

Saddles aren’t the only ergonomic accessory that will improve your riding experience, though. SQlab has a new bar-end alternative to accommodate the trend toward wider mountain bike bars. This new offering has all the benefits of a bar-end grip, but it fits on the inside of the grip, allowing for enhanced climbing leverage and balance, while also featuring up to 5% energy savings over the traditional alternative through improved aerodynamics. These easy-to-install grips retail for $49.

SQlab 611 Ergowave MTB Saddle

The new SQlab 611 Ergowave active has been specifically designed to accommodate the requirements of off-road cycling and perfectly meets the demands of all mountain and enduro. The wave-like Ergowave shape is the result of a 3-year research project to optimize the shell shape and create the raised rear section, which provides perfect rearward support as well as an optimal pressure distribution within the ischial rami. This results in improved power transmission to the pedals. The lowered nose in combination with the dip in the center provides optimal pressure relief for the perineal area. The nose on the 611 Ergowave is flatter and wider with a maximized surface area for improved pressure relief, especially on longer climbs. Four available saddle widths ensure a perfect fit. Padding material was specifically adapted for use on the mountain bike with optimal damping properties. Robust Kevlar protects the exposed sides of the saddle if you do have a crash. SQlab's active technology provides improved performance and comfort by allowing a degree of movement in the saddle wings to follow the pedaling motion, which mobilizes the spinal discs and reduces localized pressure to the sit bones.

SQlab 611 Active MTB Saddle

The lightweight 611 is meant for all mountain or enduro riding, and weighs just 220 grams. The proven SQlab step saddle shape offers more relief in the pressure sensitive areas. The construction of the active saddle allows a degree of movement in the horizontal plane, mimicking the natural motion of walking. This increases comfort, relieves the spinal discs and reduces the pressure to the sit bones. The saddle nose of the 611 active is 2.5cm longer when compared to conventional saddles. The longer nose allows elements of motocross riding techniques to be used, providing more control and more space to move freely for an advanced dynamic riding style. Also the rear section and the saddle wings provide more surface area for better rider contact. In motocross you also commonly see a step in the seat, which in this case does not provide relief, but instead more rearward support when in the forward seated riding position.

SQlab 612 Ergowave Road Saddle

The 612 Ergowave active was specifically designed to accommodate the requirements of both competitive and leisure cyclists on or off the road. The wave-like shape and raised rear section provides perfect rearward support and an optimal pressure distribution, which reaches deep into the body structures resulting in improved power transmission. The lowered nose in combination with the dip provides optimal pressure relief for the perineal area. The flat but slim SQlab MaxContact saddle nose and the firm padding of the 612 were specifically designed for the needs on the road bike. The SQlab active technology allows the saddle to follow the biomechanical motion when pedaling, resulting in increased comfort, mobilization of the spinal discs, and reduced pressure to the sit bones.

SQlab Innerbarends

Innerbarends are a new innovative evolution of the good old bar end from the early days of mountain bikes — but with a never-before-seen safety aspect. Despite the different hand position, the brake levers always remain in reach. The position somewhat resembles that of an aerobar. The Innerbarends don’t weigh much, aren’t in the way, and fit most bikes. They mount directly adjacent and inwards of the grips. The Innerbarends are ideal for XC, marathon, trail riding, touring, all mountain, and even enduro, where they provide a perfect riding position for recovery on transition stages.

SQlab Saddle Fit System Measurement

Specially trained dealers offer a free onsite “sit and fit” sit bone measurement to determine the optimum saddle width. This takes into account factors such as the sitting position, the position of the pelvis on the saddle, and the type of riding activity. The measurement takes an imprint of the location of sit bones on a measuring board or with this new system of a knob plate and measuring paper, in which plastic studs leave an impression on the paper when sat upon. The dealers are specially trained and have lots of experience advising on saddles and the ergonomic optimization of contact points.

SQlab Sitbone Demo

All SQlab saddles are available in up to five different widths. This guarantees that your sit bones lie completely flat on the saddle. This is the only way in which pressure is relieved on the sensitive perineal area in men and on the pubic arch in women, which is generally lower than in men.
