Video: Antelope Takes Out Cyclist – Again!

Video

Deer and antelope like to run when they are spooked. And it is being captured on video more and more frequently. Is it happening more often or is just being captured and exposed more with the popularity of these POV Action Cameras?

Well it has happened once again in the first stage Cape Epic stage race in South Africa. Robert Mennen from Austria was going full speed in the first stage of the race when an Duiker antelope ran directly into his path. The impact of the head-on collision was severe and Robert was instantly injured on the ground with a broken bike. We have no reports if the antelope survived the crash.

Robert never had a chance to avoid the collision as it all happened so quick on a very fast part of the course. He was injured with either a broken collarbone or a separated shoulder and his two-man team will be out of the 7-day Stage Race.

“I was in the medical center and a doctor saw it already, and he says it’s good I can move it, I can move it quite well, and he says that is good as with a broken collarbone that wouldn’t be the case. But I have a lot of pain in one part of my shoulder, so we want to be sure, so we’re going to get it x-rayed and we shall see what it is exactly,” said Mennen.

Mennen and his teammate were in fourth place overall. The race will continue through March 24, 2013 and will take cyclists through South Africa’s Western Cape.

The two well-known incidents with deer were featured here on Mtbr as well.

And the gold standard is when this racer was taken out by a huge antelope.

The moral of the story is: When riding in an area where the deer and the antelope roam, use a POV camera to capture the action and at least get some beer money from Youtube as you recover from your injuries.
