First Ever Kokanee Crankworx Pump Track Event Presented In Partnership With Monster Energy

WHISTLER, BC August 13, 2010 – The Ultimate Pump Track Challenge, created in partnership with Monster Energy, was unleashed last night on the Boneyard’s brand new Crystal Viper track. On a course reminiscent of the “Hot Wheels Criss Cross Crash Track Set,” the first ever pump track event at Kokanee Crankworx was as entertaining as it was fast-paced.

After flying flawlessly through each ladder with a huge smile plastered across his face, Mitch Ropelato (USA) secured first place and $750 against Brendan Fairclough (GBR). In the small final Danny Hart (GBR) took on Austin Aldrich (USA), with Aldrich emerging victorious in third.

For the women, a small bobble for Micayla Gatto (CAD) gave Jill Kintner (USA) more than enough time to pull in first and to grab her $750, while Emmeline Ragot (FRA) took third from Fionn Griffiths (GBR) in the small final.

“I am so stoked,” says Ropelato after the event. “This track is wild, I love all pump tracks but this one is so sweet. There are these nice tight corners, it is such a sick track.”

“We worked closely in partnership with Monster Energy to develop the Ultimate Pump Track Challenge and the fast and furious action did not disappoint,” says Jeremy Roche, Kokanee Crankworx General Manager. “We designed this course thinking the run would take around 20-25 seconds but these pros were clocking in around 15 seconds. It was an intense event.”

Pump tracks, an endless loop of steeply banked corners, doubles, gaps and rollers, have grown steadily in their popularity through the last five years. The Whistler Mountain Bike Park’s track, dubbed “Crystal Viper” is 70 feet by 90 feet, translating into a compact and spectator-friendly arena. The riders accelerate by pumping aggressively with their legs and arms rather than pedaling and as was shown over and over again last night, there is no room for error.
