The feature-length video Pedal Driven is nearing completion. Check out a new trailer for ‘Pedal Drive’ [] and help get this compelling documentary story about mountain bike access finished. The script was developed in partnership with IMBA, and the project is sponsored by Specialized.  The feature-length video will be a valuable tool for mountain bike advocates. Better yet, pledges can earn great gear and prizes — nearly 150 supporters have already achieved two-thirds of the Nov. 5 funding goal.

About this project

JOIN THE RIDE! We’re trying to make this documentary in time to launch it next April at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterrey, Calif. This will be followed by debut events in Seattle and Portland and a national tour (followed by making this available to every bike club or land management agency in the country with an interest in finding solutions to these topics). We want this to become a tool that will help mountain biking rise to legitimacy and acceptance on the American landscape, while bringing the wisdom of sustainable trailbuilding and cooperative efforts to all who share a love of our nation’s natural landscapes.

We need your help. We’re over halfway to our deadline and have a lot of fund-raising left to do. Pitch in if it feels right, pass it along to anybody you can think of, and we’ll send you all the cool stuff listed, plus you’ll have had a direct hand in making this movie possible. Thanks from all of us here at Howell at the Moon Productions for helping out.

Here’s the full skinny on the documentary:
PEDAL-DRIVEN: A BIKE-UMENTARY ( is designed to be much more than a bike movie. It’s part of a movement, a pro-sustainability. pro-cooperation, pro-access, pro-communication movement. This movie will provide a tool for advocacy whether you are a member of the mountain biking community, the conservation community or – even better – both. This documentary will take a fair-minded approach to a contentious topic, with the ultimate goal of promoting respect for the land, the preservation of our rights to access our natural public places and the adoption of sustainable practices by mountain bikers, land managers, and all who care about the future of our limited and shared natural resources.

We open our story with the clash now taking place on America’s public lands between mountain bikers – and free-riders in particular – and their federal land managers over illegal trail building. But at root this is a hopeful movie that will document the process as the two factions slowly, but surely, begin to find common ground in the form of creative and sustainable solutions. Our goal is, through beautiful cinematography and engaging storytelling, to demonstrate the shared goals and inspire further cooperation between the users and managers of our public lands.

We have been hard at work for more than a year on this project, have successfully raised $100,000 and have completed nearly all shooting for the project. Now we’re working to raise the final $70,000 necessary to complete the movie. This will allow us to edit and launch the documentary. We truly appreciate you considering helping us get there with a donation here at

Pedal-Driven is a non-profit project, being created in association with the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), so every single dollar of profit it ever generates is earmarked for future sustainable trail building and land stewardship efforts. Your dollars now could mean thousands in future donations to sustainable trail-building projects.

Our population continues to grow, but our land-base does not. As our urban centers grow, making sure we have access to these precious natural spaces becomes ever more important to our quality of life. But as pressure on public lands increases, it becomes even more vital that we consider and implement sustainable land management practices. These lands must be preserved not just for ourselves, but for the generations to come. Pedal-Driven drives home this point with a hopeful message and real-life examples of places where it is working.

We have had the great good fortune of some early sponsors committed to the work of conservation and mountain bike advocacy. Shimano, Specialized, Yakima and IMBA are but a few of the organizations who have helped bring this project along to date. Please consider joining the effort by making whatever donation is reasonable for you today.

Not only will you be part of the Pedal-Driven movement, you will get some very cool stuff in appreciation for your support. Pre-purchase the DVD, get an official movie T-shirt, tickets to the debut, one-of-a-kind mountain bike-inspired jewelry from artist Juliana Marquis – there are even bike frames contributed by Diamondback. Every dollar helps, and we’ll do our best to show our gratitude.
