Extended Play Starts June 13, Boneyard Nears Completion, Trail Crews Prep Garbanzo Zone

WHISTLER, BC, June 9, 2009 – Since the opening of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park this spring, Whistler Blackcomb  trail crews have been opening trails ahead of schedule and providing outstanding riding for the early season mountain bikers. Now is the time to get out and ride.

The entire lower section of the mountain is open and the Boneyard is not far off with a few lines open already. “The trail crew is really pumping it out,” says Rob McSkimming, VP of Business Development at Whistler Blackcomb. “It’s incredible to see how quickly everything is coming together. The Giant Slalom is near completion with the rest of the features rising from the dirt before our eyes.”

Mother Nature gave trail crews a huge helping hand by supplying the hot sunny days needed to melt the snow away in the upper trails of the Garbanzo Zone, scheduled to open June 27.  “Some thick snow-cover is still up there, but it is melting fast with this great weather,” continues McSkimming. “Our crew is starting to make their way into the Garbanzo Zone so we can crack it open as soon as possible.”

Not only is the lower park in great shape, it also offers a variety of trails and skill development centres for beginner and intermediate riders.  There are also a variety of lesson programs for riders not familiar with the Park.. Bike Park 101 offers a value priced opportunity for beginners to get a taste of park riding. Daily lessons for more advanced riders who rent from Garbanzo Rentals are available for an additional charge of only $5. Finally for those adults interested in developing their freeriding skills, Richie Schley Freeride Camps offer great instruction and guidance from pro mountain bikers Wade Simmons, Joe Schwartz and Richie Schley himself.

Whistler Mountain Bike Park Early Bird Season Passes and Triple Play Cards are still on sale. Season passes offer unlimited access for $435 plus GST or $475 after June 19.  The Triple Play Card offers three days of riding for $115 plus GST or $125 after June 19.  Riders can enjoy discounts on all additional days and the convenience of connecting the Triple Play card to their credit so they can head straight onto the lift.

Saturday June 13 marks the beginning of Extended Play in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.  Extended Play hours are from 10am to 8pm daily running until September 6, 2009. And with Extended Play comes the highly anticipated return of some of the Bike Park’s favourite programs: Women’s Nights and the Kokanee Phat Wednesday race series.

Season passes, Triple Play Cards can be purchased online at www.whistlerblackcomb.com/bike, and all products, including lessons and camps, can be purchased by phone at 1-800-766-0449 or in person at Guest Relations at the base of the Bike Park in Whistler Village.
