One of the products that has impressed us the most in the last couple of years is the Alpinestars Paragon knee pad. And given the flurry of new product introductions specially in the All Mountain category, this is no small feat.
The Paragon knee pad is a lightweight knee pad that is designed to be worn the whole time on any ride. It is pre-shaped to conform to the knee and it has built in grip elastic to keep it in place without any straps. And since it’s sold in Europe, it conforms with the protection standard EN Standard 1621.1 which means it’s legitimate protection for mountain biking.
It weighs in at 300 grams and it provides a lightweight, breathable material behind the knee designed to ventilate and prevent binding and chafing during pedaling.
As we talked to many Enduro World Series athletes like Jerome Clementz and Anneke Beerten over the years, we were surprised to learn that this is the pad of their choice among the entire Alpinestars line-up. It’s not a big pad by any means but they feel it’s enough to protect them in these often scary EWS courses.
And the real kicker is it’s only $40 a pair! The value is almost inconceivable as there is nothing in its price range even with sub-par products and brands.
And yes, we’ve used this pad for well over a year and have had many crashes with them. They’ve protected us every time and they still look fresh.
As far as new products, Alpinestars was excited to show us a lighter version of the Volcano pad. This one called the Vento is designed to offer more ventilation with better materials and more advanced construction keeping them in place.
