Review: Gamut Trail SXR Guide

Modern 1x drivetrains have converted all but the most stalwart 2x users due to reduced weight, comparable gearing, and a myriad of other benefits. They’ve also obliterated the market for chain guides, because unless you race or send it huge, there’s very little reason to run one.

Running a bash guard comes at a small weight penalty, but will save your expensive chainring.

My best huck to flat and gas to finish days are behind me, but I’m still very much a hack. I’ve bashed my chain ring more times than I’d like to admit attempting to trials over logs and learned the hard way that narrow wide rings don’t like taking direct hits. To keep my chains on the straight and narrow, I like to run a bash guard.

The Gamut Trail SXR is a minimalist chain retention device that combines a top guide and a lightweight polycarbonate bash guard. The top guide is adjustable between 28T to 36T chainrings. Two bashguards (plus assorted mounting hardware) are included in the box. The smaller bash is designed for 28-33T rings and the larger will accommodate between 34-36T.
