KVA Stainless (TM) and Alchemy Bicycle Company(TM) sponsor U.S. National Cycle Courier Championships with handmade MS2(TM) stainless steel bicycle frames
Escondido, Calif. KVA Stainless(TM) is partnering with Austin, Texas, handmade bicycle builder Alchemy Bicycle Company to provide MS2(TM) stainless steel handmade custom bicycle frames as first prizes in the men’s and women’s races at the 2011 North American Cycle Courier Championships, October 8-9 at The Driveway, Austin, Texas.
The exciting new MS2 stainless steel tubing caused a stir at its launch earlier this year by being on three award-winning bicycles at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show.
The fastest cycle messengers in North America, including riders from USA, Canada and Mexico, will compete at the event, with names such as Jason Clary, Austin Horse, Emi Brown, Wilis Johnson, Crihs Thormann (not a typo), Kell McKenzie, Josh Bennet, and Christina Peck vying for the Alchemy frames made with KVA’s MS2 tubing.
Oakland rider, Clary, 29, an Oakland, Calif. messenger who rides for Area Cycles and LDG, won the Red Bull Ride and Style messengers race in San Francisco earlier this year. Clary said, “This is the top event for messengers, there’s a lot at stake. It’s great to see sponsors stepping up with serious prizes. I’ve been riding and training every day, it’s going to be a great weekend’s racing.”
Doug Gore, vice-president of sales for KVA Stainless, said, “Street style/fast bikes–the identity is still forming itself–we are aware of lots of young people, non-traditional cyclists, now riding bicycles in American cities, and bicycle messengers are the pro riders of this world. We acknowledge the role played by bicycle messengers in the fast-paced city life, and we are pleased and proud to support these hard-working thought leaders and experts of the bicycle.”
Brian Davies, organizer of the NACCC and a bicycle messenger himself, said, “Having a handmade custom bicycle made by one of the top builders, from one of the most advanced materials on the market, is a treasured prize for any cyclist. Speaking as both a bike messenger and an event organizer, I appreciate that KVA Stainless and Alchemy Bicycle Company have stepped up as sponsors and I encourage other cycling manufacturers to follow their lead.”
MS2, which stands for Martensitic Stainless Steel, uses a patented seam-welded process that produces a more ductile, tougher tube allowing air-hardenable martensitic stainless steels to be used in welded applications historically considered impractical.
Not only is MS2 tubing readily available in a multitude of sizes and thicknesses, but also it is drawing rich praise from frame-builders for its workability. As for the ride characteristics of this strong, lightweight, corrosion-resistant metal, Canadian frame builder Sam Whittingham of Naked Bicycles reports that his customers are “over the moon” about the way it rides.
Dave Ryther, national sales manager for Alchemy, said, “It is exciting to work with the winners of this competition to design and build custom rigs that will endure the challenges that these frames will face in this uniquely harsh discipline of riding. We are confident that by using KVA, the winner’s MS2 Alchemys will be lifetime mementos of their accomplishments at this year’s NACCs.“
