New Rocky Mounts 15mm / 20mm Thru-Axle Adapter That Locks

RockyMounts unleashed the first ever thru-axle mount to carry both 15mm and 20mm thru-axles with the ability to lock. RockyMounts thru-axle line is now available for purchase.

RockyMounts DriveShaft introduces a more practical solution for carrying a fatty thru-axle bike. It highlights a solid metal body, a wide mouth opening for easy loading, snap-in nylon shims to switch between 15mm and 20mm thru-axles, an adjustable cam lever to tighten and firmly hold your bike in place, and a trusty lock for security.

RockyMounts thru-axle line is broken into three products:

DriveShaft- A fork mount adapter that fits standard fork mounts from RockyMounts®, Thule® and Yakima®. Lock and keys included. Retails for $69.95.

DriveShaft HM- A bolt on hard mount for the bed of your truck. Lock and keys included. Retails for $74.95.

DriveShaft SD- (Does it all) A mount that fits snug inside the bed channels found on Toyota®, Chevy®, and GMC®, can also be used as a truck bed bolt-on mount, or as a fork mount adapter. Comes with a 9mm dummy axle to also fit standard 9mm axles. Lock and keys included. Retails for $89.95.

RockyMounts thru-axle line is currently available in select stores and online. RockyMounts received their first batch of 300 DriveShafts on May 17th. After one day of inventory and eight days of un-advertised sales, RockyMounts DriveShaft sold out. There were close to 200 pre-sold to dealers and consumers and 50 patiently awaiting customers who jumped on the opportunity to grab from the first batch. The rest trickled out quickly from internet sales. Another shipment to the RockyMounts warehouse in Boulder, CO is expected to arrive on June 12th.

This is a great idea, but a god awful product. The adapter tends to rotate in the mounts, which is not confidence inspiring. I brought this up with the people at Rockymounts and they said to rotate it back after mounting the axle into the adapter. The problem is that motion actually tightens the thru-axle even tighter into the fork. This actually resulted in the axle getting locked into the fork, to the point it could not be removed manually. It actually snapped off the release from one bike. Finally got it removed and will have to by a new axle. A second bike mounted using this adapter actually stripped the teeth on the retaining mechanism opposite of the quick release side. When will they jest build a thru-axle friendly mount instead of an adapter that won’t stay situated properly in the mount?

add a pair of star or lock washer to the mix and torque the hell out of it. this should only be a problem with the channel mount setup where you use the upright position that uses 2 fasteners instead of 4. This is a design flaw but can be easily fixed by installing properly.

I don’t suppose you want to get rid of it. I have an experimental purpose, but would have to saw off the legs and weld new ones.

Follow up. Just some props to Bobby at RockyMounts. He offered to cover the repair cost of the damage unsolicited. This showed a lot of integrity and great customer service. In addition, one of the guys there did have a solution for the rotation issue that works well by installing the mount through a different set of holes ine the adapter that prevents rearward rotation. This prevents it from tightening the axle into the fork. There is still some forward rotation, but it is negligible.

Thanks, Bobby – that was above and beyond expectations!
