In place of the in-person event, Sea Otter organizers have launched Sea Otter Play.

This spring, the organizers of the Sea Otter Classic postponed this year’s festival due to concerns arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. The event was rescheduled for this October. Yet as luck would have it, the festival had to be canceled in the interest of public health and safety. Sea Otter CEO, Frank Yohannan, officially announced the 2020 event was canceled on July 1.

“After frequent discussions with Monterey County health officials, it has become clear that we cannot host an event that will meet our health and safety standards,” Yohannan wrote in a press release confirming the cancellation of the 2020 event.

One of my favorite annual cycling events. Such a shame that it now has left such a bad taste in my mouth. No refunds of any kind for the dedicated participants like me, who always purchase tickets in advance. Bad show Sea Otter, bad show.

I agree, I’ve always enjoyed Sea Otter, but this is pretty crappy of them. When the event was first cancelled they said we could either get a refund or deferred registration for next year. When I emailed them about a refund they responded with “Sorry, no longer offering refund, you can defer registration to next year”. Now it’s no refund, no deferred registration. So they are keeping our money and only offering us some “virtual ride challenges”? Yeah, I don’t need “virtual ride challenges”. Last weekend I went down to Ft. Ord and did my own ride. I think in the future I’ll be plenty happy doing that and skipping the event.

Pretty bad decision. I have no intention of ever looking at a bike festival on a screen. Ignorant sob’s think we’re all a bunch of effing computer nerds. We’re interested in talking to industry insiders and checking out new bikes and gear in real life. Bunch of damn robbers running the show over there. Not getting my coin again.
