Specialized introduces new tech to Recon shoe line

Three-new additions bring new features and more affordable prices

News Shoes

This week Specialized launched three new additions to its popular Recon shoe line. Like the Recon, these new shoes are aimed at the off-road and gravel rider, but unlike the flagship Recon – the price tag is much more manageable for racers on a budget or want more walkability in their shoes. The new line up boasts three offerings, including the Recon 3.0 which mates a carbon outsole with a Pavé-inspired glass fiber forefoot to create Carbon STRIDE toe-flex. This new Specialized tech lets your foot function naturally off the bike, yet still provides incredible power transfer with a stiffness index of 10.0. This new tech trickles down the Recon line from carbon to nylon and will be much appreciated on the ‘cross course or exploring during a gravel ride. – Read on to find out more about the Specialized updated Recon line.

Specialized Recon 3.0

The Recon 3.0 is all about putting the performance of Specialized S-Works Recon—power transfer, comfort, lightweight, style—in a package perfect for the XC and gravel rider. Specialized Recon 3.0 delivers comfort and efficiency, with features that stand-out off the beaten path.

STRIDE Toe-Flex

Recon 3.0 mates a carbon outsole with a Pavé-inspired glass fiber forefoot to create Carbon STRIDE toe-flex, which lets your foot function naturally off the bike, yet still provides incredible power transfer with a stiffness index of 10.0. Whether you’re flying up a run-up on the ‘cross course or strolling into the brewhouse post-ride, STRIDE toe-flex is a game-changer.

Specialized gave the Recon 3.0 XPEL Mesh to create a comfortable fit that sheds water, keeping the shoe light and making it dry as fast as it rides. The Specialized SlipNot compound provides full rubber coverage of the outsole for off-bike traction on any surface, with open treads to eject mud. Dual L6-Snap Boas and a Velcro forefoot closure ensure micro-adjustable comfort with a secure fit designed for all-day comfort and performance, whether your ride calls for open gravel, twisting single track, and even more than your fair share of hike-a-bike.

Body Geometry sole and footbed are built with purpose and backed by science to boost power, increase efficiency, and reduce the chance of injury by optimizing hip, knee, and foot alignment. Carbon STRIDE toe-flex technology allows for natural toe movement off-bike but remains stiff for pedaling: Stiffness Index 10.0)

Specialized Recon 3.0 Highlights

  • Fully-welded upper reduces seams for superior step-in comfort.
  • Independent BOA L6-Snap dials for on-the-fly micro-adjustment.
  • SlipNot rubber tread for confident traction on all terrain with removable toe studs.
  • Two-bolt cleat pattern fits all major MTB pedals.
  • Approximate weight: 355g (1/2 pair, Size 42)
  • Price: $225.00

Specialized Recon 2.0

Just because winning an XC World Cup isn’t on your to-do list, doesn’t mean you don’t value performance and comfort. Recon 2.0 is your shoe – Inspired by S-Works Recon, with Body Geometry comfort and efficiency, Recon 2.0 puts all that performance within easy reach.

Using Specialized new exclusive STRIDE toe-flex technology, the nylon outsole uses a TPU injected forefoot for natural movement off-bike, while still providing a stiffness index of 6.0 for in the saddle performance. Specialized also lifted the heel for an even more natural feeling while walking or exploring.

To create traction off the bike in wet or dry, gravel or dirt, Specialized covered the nylon outsole with its SlipNot compound. If the traction’s needed in the wet, you can also rest easy knowing the XPEL mesh used through the Recon 2.0 won’t get bogged down with water and will dry exceptionally quickly. No more wet shoes the morning after a wet ride. An L6-Snap Boa and a Velcro forefoot closure ensure micro-adjustable comfort with a secure fit designed for all-day comfort and performance, whether your ride calls for open gravel, twisting single track, and even more than your fair share of hike-a-bike. Body Geometry sole and footbed are built with purpose and backed by science to boost power, increase efficiency, and reduce the chance of injury by optimizing hip, knee, and foot alignment. Specialized Recon 1.0

With the Recon 1.0, the Specialized goal was simple—put S-Works Recon-inspired performance in a very accessible package. Easier said than done, but from the looks of it, they met their goal. A shoe with Body Geometry comfort and efficiency in a durable, dirt-focused shoe with lots of colorways to match riders’ style and gear – done.
