KONAWORLD (June 10, 2009) – The year 1998 was a historic. Google launched, Seinfeld ended and the first Kona Groove Approved Bike Park at Whistler Resort, B.C. opened for shredding. Since then, we’ve enjoyed more than a decade-long partnership with the world-famous Whistler Mountain Bike Park. This summer, Kona Groove Approved Whistler Bike Park continues to build on its legacy with the expansion of Garbanzo Zone and completely redesigned Slopestyle, Giant Slalom and Dual Slalom courses. To top it off, Kona’s new line of rental bikes are available exclusively at Whistler.
The Kona Bike Park maintains three different skill centers carefully designed for all ability levels and an Air Dome of 8,400 square-feet of indoor mountain biking. Not to mention the mountain bike zone that tripled the bike park’s vertical in 2004: the Garbanzo Zone. This 2,200 vert of singletrack has yet to open along with the new trail sections of Blue Velvet, Freight Trail and the completely revamped No Joke.
Lesson and rental programs have been amped up this year to reflect the epic range of trails Whistler offers. The Bike Park 101 is a chance for the new mountain biker to saddle up and explore the bike park while learning downhill techniques with a guide. If you think you’re a pro, opt to get to know the mountain better with an expert guide and sign up for a Lesson Upgrade with the purchase of a lift and rental package.
But, what good is a lesson without a sweet, specifically tailored-to-your-level, full-sus rig? That’s where Kona comes in. Our rental bike fleets at all our Bike Parks will feature a wide variety of Garbanzo bikes for all ages.
For 2009, we offer six new adult and three new younger ripper Garbanzo bikes. From dirt jumping to XC cruising to DH plowing, there’s a killer bike available for it all. Hop on rigs like the Coilair, Dawg, One20, Shred, Stinky and Supreme – which comes complete with an ultra-burly, trail tested Stab frame. Also this year, we are introducing a new line of bikes available only at Whistler. Test your style and form on course with the Garbanzo Deluxe and Primo (both are constructed with Stinky frames) while the little rippers wheel around on the dual suspension 2-4. As if you needed more, anyone who purchases a Kona bike this year and registers the warranty online is given the option to download a sweet coupon for a full range of discounts at Bike Parks across the globe. Perks include discounts on hotels, restaurants and lift passes at numerous venues.
Get ready to follow another year of Kokanee Crankworx, Aug 8 – 16, 2009, as it continues to make its mark as the most ground-breaking festival of its kind bringing in thousands of mountain bike enthusiasts and backflippin’, 720 huckin’ athletes each year.
